ECOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE RESILIENCE IN SUMATRA’S HIGHLANDS
Enhancing the climate resilience of, and the livelihoods dependent on, Sumatra Gayo coffee systems in Aceh / Indonesia.
The Project intervention aims to mitigate the threats and impact of climate change on the Gayo coffee by supporting the optimization of shading for the coffee farms while at the same time offering a diversified source of income for the beneficiaries; support the promotion and adoption of good agricultural practices to enhance coffee productivity; and contribute to improvements in soil fertility and soil/water conservation.
The project to provide coffee farmers with timely and
appropriate specific skills development and capacity building through Good Agricultural Practices trainings and coaching. 4 training modules will be developed for the purpose of the Project on the following topics: soil fertility; soil erosion control, GAP for coffee (incl. pruning, optimal shading etc.) and optimal use of
conventional phytosanitary practices.
The project will enhance 11,800 ha of agricultural productive and not yet-productive Arabica coffee farms. On coffee farmland, fruit shade trees will benefit coffee farmers by providing an additional source of income from popular commodities. The productivity of coffee yields in the project area will be maintained. Villagers who were part of the project do understand the needs to change their coffee farming practices if they want to sustain their farming future.
The Project aims to positively impact the livelihoods of c. 10,000 smallholder coffee farmers in 250 villages across Aceh Tengah and Bener Meriah, by promoting the production and distribution of c. 1.8 million tree seedlings (amongst them income generating species such as avocado, durian, and candlenut), facilitating farmers’ access to locally produced organic fertilizer and by making available sustained technical assistance in an effort to diversify their income opportunities and ultimately to improve their livelihoods.
The envisaged shade optimization systems will promote tree diversification through local hardwood and mostly cash crop trees to improve local climate, increase productivity of the coffee smallholder farmland by adapting to climate change, mitigating the pest and diseases associated to it, protecting water resources and avoid soil erosion.
