  • Seven of the world's rarest rhinoceroses have been found in a national park in Indonesia. This is the first time the creatures have been seen in 26 years. Deforestation is still pushing the Sumatran toward extinction.

    Hidden cameras buried deep in an Indonesian national park have snapped images of seven critically endangered Sumatran rhinos. The rhinos haven't been seen in more than a quarter of a century and conservationists had feared the Sumatran was extinct. But, six females and one male rhino are now known to live in the Mount Leuser National Park, which is on the northern tip of Sumatra. More

  • The Leuser Management Unit (LMU), while implementing the Leuser Development Programme (funded jointly by the EU and GoI), officially launched the Elephant Patrol Unit (EPU) in Aras Napal on 9 May 2000 and this was the first of its kind in Indonesia. More

  • The Conservation Response Unit (CRU) will mitigate human-elephant conflicts. This Unit has four trained elephants under the supervision of a mahout provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). The project will support the initial cost for the infrastructure development of the CRU and also support its operational costs until 2016. The elephants will be supported and the local community will participate in monitoring wildlife conflicts and illegal forestry activities. More

PEJABAT KEDUTAAN BESAR AS MENGUNJUNGI SEKOLAH DI SUBULUSSALAM DAN ACEH SELATAN

Pada tanggal 17 – 19 September 2013 yang lalu, YLI bersama dengan Bryan Rick Switzer dan Kanchana Aksorn-Aree dari Kedutaan Besar Amerika Serikat di Thailand, telah melakukan kunjungan ke beberapa sekolah di Kotamadaya Subulussalam dan kabupaten Aceh Selatan. Dalam hal ini Kedutaan Besar Amerika merupakan salah satu donor YLI untuk kegiatan Pendidikan Lingkungan di sekolah-sekolah dan masyarakat sekitar Kawasan Ekosistem Leuser.

Sekolah yang pertama dikunjungi adalah MTsN Simpang Kiri, Subulussalam. Sekolah ini memiliki 500 siswa dan sudah membentuk Eco Club sejak tahun 2009. Dalam pertemuan dengan pihak sekolah yang dihadiri oleh para siswa dan guru, Kepala Sekolah MTsN Simpang Kiri menyatakan kegembiraan beliau karena sekolah ini telah menjadi bagian dari Eco Club YLI dan berharap pelatihan bagi para guru untuk Buku Ajar Leuser dapat segera dilaksanakan. Kunjungan selanjutnya dilakukan ke sekolah SMP Negeri 3 Sultan Daulat, Subulussalam dan SMP Negeri 1 Trumon Timur, Aceh Selatan. Kedua sekolah ini juga menyambut baik program Eco Club yang dicanangkan YLI serta penggunaan Buku Ajar Leuser di sekolah mereka.

YLI dan perwakilan Kedutaan Amerika juga menyempatkan diri mengunjungi Conservation Response Unit (CRU) di Trumon yang merupakan salah satu kegiatan yang dijalankan YLI dengan dana yang berasal dari TFCA Sumatera.

Sekembalinya dari kunjungan tersebut, Konsulat Amerika di Medan mengadakan Press Release tentang bantuan pendanaan dan kunjungan ke lapangan yang dilakukan oleh pejabat Kedutaan Besar Amerika. Acara ini diselenggarakan oleh Olson Trevor, Deputi Konsul Amerika di Medan beserta staff dan dihadiri oleh sejumlah wartawan dan para wakil dari instansi pemerintah terkait dan beberapa LSM lingkungan yang wilayah kerjanya berada di propinsi Aceh dan Sumatera Utara. Dalam Press Releasenya pihak Kedutaan Amerika menyampaikan kegembiraan mereka dengan program Pendidikan Lingkungan yang dijalankan YLI sebagai langkah konkrit yang dapat diberikan kepada anak-anak dan guru serta masyarakat guna memotivasi dan meningkatkan kepedulian masyarakat terhadap pentingnya menjaga kelestarian lingkungan untuk masa kini dan masa yang akan datang.

US EMBASSY OFFICERS VISIT SCHOOLS IN SUBULUSSALAM AND ACEH SELATAN

On 17 to 19 September 2013, the LIF along with Bryan Rick Switzer and Kanchana Aksorn-Aree from the U.S. Embassy in Thailand, visited several schools in Subulussalam municipality and South Aceh district. This is because the U.S. Embassy is one of LIF’s donors for Environmental Education activities in schools and communities around the Leuser Ecosystem.
