On Thursday, 14 August 2014, the Medan district court sentenced Dedek Setiawansyah to 1 year and 4 months in jail and a fine of Rp 5 million for trafficking protected animals.
He was arrested by the Fast Reaction Unit of the Forestry Police (SPORC) in Medan on 4 April 2014 for allegedly trafficking 2 golden cats (Felis temminckii), 1 lar gibbon (Hylobates lar), and 1 Siamang (Hylobates syndactylus). Ir. John Kenedie MM, Head of the Conservation Agency (BBKSDA), expressed his appreciation to the panel of judges for passing the sentence and hoped it would be a precedent to other similar cases in the future and serve as a warning to other wildlife traffickers.
